Stump! Trivia winners for week 2 of February 2011: Medium Head Mode

A long time ago…

When I first opened Manifest over a year ago, then like now, were places closing down all around island.  I recall in the wake of the “Ward” crash, where every restaurant and bar closed their doors permanently.  I attended one of the “Closing Auctions” for the E&O Trading Company and it was a chilling reality check for me.  Here I was, on the ledge of taking the biggest risk of my life, here before me were the shattered remains of someone else’s business.  This guy, who couldn’t be anyone else but the owner, was quietly whimpering as friends and family consoled him and went back to boxing things up or just walked around like in a day dream, meanwhile his pet shitzu ran around the restaurant as I and others rummaged through glassware and shakers.  Gentlemen in suits, probably stooges from the bank, were holding clip boards pointed at things and took notes and then floated to another area and pointed at something else and continued this until they were out of sight; probably in the kitchen continuing this odd burial ritual.  I remember hearing something about the Ward managing team wanting E&O out of the building asap.  What a shitty way to end.

Today Pipeline Café’ held their closing auction and as tempted as I was to walk behind “enemy lines”, all I could think of was how lucky we at Manifest have been to been blessed with such loyal and positive people in it’s young life.  From the bank to our landlord, to our friends and the new ones we make every day, thank you for keeping Manifest real and alive…we all know it wouldn’t be anything without you.

“Reggae” every 2nd Thursday

Did you hear that Manifest will be doing a regular reggae night?

Huuuuuuwhat?!

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiyeah!!!

Manifest will now have true Reggae happening every 2nd Thursday of the month, starting next month Febuary 11th, 2011 @ 10pm with a Guinness on special. And for those of you who don’t know, “Guinness for Strength.”

DJ Westafa, Born in Torrance, California had original roots reaching back to Hawaii where he now lives and works. His father, a native of the islands, would play island style music in bands around California but when asked about what first got Westafa interested in music, he says that his greatest influences were moments when Westafa and his friends would head over to neighbors garage. DJ Tres would let them go through records and play around with the tables, which he says, weighed heavily on his experiences spinning style to this day. At that time Hip Hop was what introduced him to the disc jockeying game but in high school he had had a “self discovery” . He was attracted to reggae because the people who were enthusiast “lived and breathed the music. The music came with a responsibility.”

Many years later he mentions that in comparison to a heavy metal band who might believe that they have an uphill battle in Honolulu because of what they’re playing, that he has an even greater uphill battle because everyone in Hawaii believes that what they are listen to and like IS reggae.

“People will show up to my gigs and patiently wait til after I spin a Gregory Issac’s record and ask, “When will you start playing reggae?”

Westafa hopes to achieve with his unique approach to reggae is “style” and with his own artistic brush stroke introduce music to the open mind appreciator a style one “can feel….vibrations from.”

Proud

In our busy days we sometimes overlook the hard work of those who are laying it all down in sight of things that are greater. Teachers work for less but continue, because they believe. DJ’s spin for small thankful crowds packed into tight spaces, because they believe. And local artists are insistent and refuse to give up their passions, because they believe. A few months back Kamea Hadar held an art exihibit at Manifest and just recently I ran into him.   He expressed his thankfulness for the Manifest because from his that one opportunity at MF, lead to the next(which was at Edition Hotel’s bars) and now…well look for yourself.
